Before you hit send
- Say the amount and the reason. “The ₹850 for Saturday’s dinner” is easier to settle than “that money”.
- Make paying a single step. Send your UPI ID or a payment request along with the message.
- Offer part payment. It turns an awkward “all of it” into a doable first step.
- Keep it in writing. One thread, one amount, so nobody has to remember who said what.
Hesitating is normal. One person on Reddit put it this way: “…it feels wrong to ask him back my money even though it is my money.” A kind, clear message is how you ask without making it a big thing.

Questions
Is it rude to ask a friend to pay me back?
No. It is your money, and a short, specific message is easier on both of you than silence. The awkwardness tends to grow the longer you wait, so a polite reminder with the amount and the reason is usually the kindest option.
How long should I wait before asking?
There is no fixed rule. For small amounts, a reminder after a week or two is reasonable. For larger sums, agree on a date when you lend, so that the reminder is only a nudge about something you both already know.
Should I ask on WhatsApp or in person?
A written message works well for most cases because it carries the amount and what it was for, and nobody is put on the spot. For large sums or for family, a quick call first and a message afterwards to confirm is gentler.
What if they ignore my message?
Follow up once after a few days, and offer to take it in two parts if the full amount is hard. Keep the conversation in one thread so the record is clear. If it still goes nowhere, decide whether you want to lend to that person again.
